What is church membership?
Church membership means commitment to a spiritual family. It's about becoming a vital organ in a living body. Romans 12:4, 5, Ephesians 2:19-20At the instance of your conversion, you become "members" in the universal church of Christ. This is the invisible body. But the Bible urges us to continue growing by becoming "participating members" in a specific local assembly. This is the outworking of the universal church. Romans 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12:25; 14:12, 26; Hebrews 10:14-15; 1 Timothy 3:14-15. Hebrews 10:24-25
Why is church membership important?
First - the idea of membership is recurrent in the New Testament although the word 'membership' may not appear. Paul always writes his letters to specific local churches.
Second - leaders need to know who comprise of the flock. Members get priority for resources, time and attention.
Third - it will benefit us because commitment brings spiritual growth through relationship. Character development happens when you relate closely with one another. Commitment builds character.
Christianity is not just about believing but it is belonging. We cannot grow spiritually in isolation. Christ never asked us to 'go' to church but to 'belong' to a community..
